Parks
Tobacco/Nicotine free park policies reinforce the purpose of parks; to promote wellness, enjoy fresh air, and exercise. There are several reasons why tobacco and nicotine products should be prohibited from park environments.
- Youth frequent parks and it is important that youth role modeling is a priority in the community.
- Secondhand smoke harms everyone and there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke.
- Cigarette butts are the most commonly littered piece of waste worldwide and are not biodegradable.13 The potential for ingestion of toxic cigarette butts by toddlers, pets and wildlife is very dangerous.
- Additional tobacco product waste, such as packaging, is often littered and unsightly.
